A Komodo Dragon arrived at Budapest Zoo

A new animal, a Komodo Dragon arrived at Budapest Zoo in April 24 from Chester Zoo in England. These animals are the world's heaviest living lizards. Fully-grown the animals are three metres long and their weight is around 70 kg. The new arrival in Budapest is just 15 months old and 1 metre long. Among the most dangerous and the rarest animals in the world, the creature has been named dragon due to its great size and deep-forked, yellow tongue.

New 5 star hotel to open in Budapest

The first 5-star hotel, the Buddha-Bar Hotel Klotild Palace Budapest of the Mellow Mood Group will be opened in early 2009. It will be located in the Klotild Palace at the foot of the Elizabeth Bridge. The 5 star luxury hotel with a unique design will be situated in the main street of Budapest and will contain 102 rooms, including 30 suites, bar, a conference hall, business center, fitness salon and Buddha-Bar.

Budapest Public Transport Museum re-opened

The Budapest Public Transport Museum situated in the town of Szentendre (Northern Budapest), reopened for the season with new attractions on April 5. The 16 years old museum introduces the past 120 years of Budapest public transport with 60 different vehicles including trams, buses, trolleys and trains. A renovated BKV-Ikarus 260T trolley as a new attraction, a 110 years old tram and a 120 years old HÉV are on display. The transport-inspired works of several little-known painters can also be viewed.

Museum of Fine Arts area will be extended

Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) in Budapest will be enlarged by 6,000 square meters of underground space over two stories. The museum will be built underneath the Heroes' Square (Hősök tere), based on the design of architect Tamás Karácsony. The project will include a restaurant, coffee shops, an area of 1,200 square meters specially designed for featured exhibitions, and a museum shop. The new complex will be complete by 2010. During the construction works the museum will remain open.

Horse race planned at Heroes Square in Budapest

A horse race is to be staged at Heroes Square as part of a festival that organisers hope will become an annual event. The "National Gallop" (Nemzeti Vágta) will be the centrepiece of a cultural and national image festival organised by advertising figure Péter Geszti. He expects about 100 riders for the race from all over Hungary. The festival will give towns and regions from across Hungary an opportunity to present their communities in tents on Andrássy út.

MÁV offers discounts on train travel to Western Europe

It's possible to head west of Hungary very cheaply with train ticket discounts offered by the MÁV (Hungarian State Railway). Though the advertisements and website are only in Hungarian, with a little know-how, it's possible to take advantage of the company's "Go West" discount program, which offers one-way train tickets to Western European destinations from €13 (Ft 3,400). MÁV doesn't indicate an end date to this sale, and a representative at the train station said the sale will likely last through the summer.

Robotic parking garage opens in downtown Budapest

An automated parking garage has opened in Budapest's fifth district on Reáltanoda utca. The garage structure can hold 200 cars and its operators expect over 80% of spots to be taken by pass-holders. The parking garage utilizes modern parking tray technology, which means that drivers do not have to find an empty spot in the building, their cars are simply moved from ground-level boxes to empty spaces by machines. The garage is open 24 hours a day.

Bike "parking lots" planned for Budapest

Local government of Budapest is planning to equip the metro area and HÉV stations with "parking lots" for bicycles. Following the example of the "park and ride" (P+R) parking lots put in place for automobiles, the "B+R parking lots" would make it possible to reach metro or HÉV lines by bicycle and continue the journey via public transport. According to Hungarian Bicycle Club chairman János László, the bike parking spaces could end up being as popular in Budapest as in some other large cities in Europe, where virtually every metro station is equipped with organized facilities for storing bicycles.

Art district planned for Bartók Béla street in Budapest

The local government of Újbuda (eleventh district in Budapest), wants to transform the area of Móricz Zsigmond körtér and Szent Gellért tér into an art district filled with cafés, restaurants, galleries and antique shops. Once Metro 4 is completed, they would also restrict motorized traffic in the area. The heart of the new district would be the Hadik barracks and the statue of author Gárdonyi Géza. Gárdonyi square will be covered with ornamental stone, while the Bartók 32 gallery will be turned into a community centre and the Csonka Museum will be opened for "public functions".

Budapest Ferihegy to enter Schengen Zone

Budapest Ferihegy International Airport will be fully integrated into the Schengen border system by March 30, airport operator Budapest Airport has announced. The Schengen system allows passengers from EU countries to travel freely without having their documents checked. However, the travel documents of passengers arriving from outside the EU will continue to be strictly monitored. Luggage and safety checks will remain unchanged for all passengers. Terminal 2A will now be dedicated to Schengen Zone passengers, while non-Schengen traffic will use Terminal 2B.
